Nike Kobe 8 ‘Challenge Red’ ($180)
At first glance you see the Kobe 8’s engineered mesh upper featuring a knit-in ‘Mamba’ pattern which is extremely eye catching regardless of colour. It draws inspiration from Kobe’s on-court altar-ego the ‘Black Mamba’ as well as 2013 being the year of the snake.
Other than looking good, the engineered mesh provides a dynamic, ultra-light fit that moves with the foot and gives 360 degree breathability. The shoe also features a full-length ‘Lunarlon’ midsole which delivers lightweight, low-profile cushioning and allows greater stability. Now, I know I’ve used the word LIGHT a few times already but I don’t have a choice, at 9.6 ounces it is one of Kobes lightest shoes to date. While remaining light the shoe still has a good amount substance, with most of the weight coming from the bottom half of the shoe. The 3-D anatomical heel counter (plastic part on heel) provides a sleek look and a locked down fit while the glass composite mid-foot shank (black plate under the sole) gives it some rigidity and adds some natural spring to the step. Aside from being a technical wonder this shoes has great cross-over appeal. What I mean by that is it’s able to be worn on and off-court without looking out of place.
Air Jordan 5 ‘Black Grape’ ($200)
A new color on old favorites is nothing new in the world of sneakers. This colorway will be the first of the year to stray away from the originals as far as the Air Jordan V is concerned. Of course it doesn’t stray too far, sporting the same purple and emerald combo as the OG, while flipping out the white leather base for black suede. The result has given this shoe quite a bit of buzz, with many folks applauding Jordan Brand for a proper new-age take on a classic look. This is a great colorway, and easy on the eyes – pretty much all that’s needed for an easy pick-up. Like I said about the OG Grape release a while back, either you want them or you don’t. If so, DONT SLEEP!!!
You should know the drill by now. Doors @ 10:00, there WILL be a line. Get up early and get your pair.
