Yesterday was a big day in the world of music, Coachella finally released their official lineup for 2012! After weeks of speculation and fake lineups popping up all over the web, the real deal is here to stay. What a great year to have the festival on back-to-back weekends (April 13-15 and April 20-22)!
There are so many great acts this year, it is tough to decide where to start! The obvious place to start is with the headliners, so I think that is what I will do. The 3 headlining acts for this year are The Black Keys, the heavily anticipated, Radiohead, and the huge surprise, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. The Black Keys make a ton of sense when you break it down. Following the release of “El Camino”, this duo is pretty much the most talked about band of the last few months. They are a great choice to close out the first night and will definitely not disappoint. Next, the group that everybody and their dog speculated would be on the bill, Radiohead. There were half a dozen fake lineups released recently and every single one of them contained Radiohead. They have hinted at playing the US this summer and what better place to start than Indio? Finally, Dr. Dre and Snoop are going to shut the whole thing down! This one came right out of left field and what a great surprise it was! There is bound to be a lot of “The Chronic” and “Doggystyle”, and who can complain about that?
For me however, the real treat is all the bands that are getting back together to play this festival. If you were to tell me that Refused and At The Drive-In would both be reuniting simultaneously to play the same music festival, I would have told you to take a hike and quit pulling my leg. Well, take that hike down to Indio, CA and quit pulling my leg so I can join you! I am not going to sleep for months in anticipation of this glorious occasion! And, while I am not sleeping I will surely be listening to copious amounts of “The Shape of Punk to Come”, “Relationship of Command”, “In Casino/Out”, and “Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent”. Refused, At The Drive-In, and Dre aren’t the only ones coming out of the woodworks to grace us with their presence either! British pop legends, Squeeze, and British Ska Pioneers, Madness, are also going lay down a few jams! I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to here Suggs pound out “Our House” Or Paul Carrack swoon us with “Tempted”. My mom will be so proud!
Enough with the old guys, let’s talk about some of the lesser known acts that everyone should know! First, I am going to start with mixtape master A$AP Rocky. This Hip-hop up-and-comer is great to see on the lineup! His actual first name is Rakim, after Eric B. and Rakim, so you know this kid was destined for greatness! His mixtape LiveLoveA$AP has been getting a lot of love, and deservedly so. Another young (only by name) hip-hop act worth seeing is Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover). Fun fact, he got this name from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator! How ridiculous is that? Give “Camp” a listen and you will understand why I am excited for Childish Gambino. Someone that I was not surprised to see on this lineup, but I was surprised to see so high up on the list is The Weeknd. This Canadian kid turned heads with his release “House of Balloons” and has been getting rave reviews from everyone! I personally can’t wait to hear his soulful jams at this massive concert. The last name I am going to drop quickly is Gotye. This dude is ridiculously talented, basically does everything on his own. He’s been blowing up on YouTube as of late, and I’m sure this means he is going to make a real splash in the world of music any day now. “Making Mirrors” is his newest album and the song “Someone I Used to Know” is very ear-friendly.
There are so many unbelievable acts on this bill, I couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface. Check out the lineup for yourself and let us know your thoughts! Who would you be excited to see? Who are you surprised to see? Who do you wish was going to be there? All I know is this lineup was a great introduction to the music festival season and I am very excited to see what the other festivals have in store,
